If you’re under 16 and have a job lined up, you’ll need a work permit before you can start working. This permit is required by the State of New Mexico to make sure students are working safe jobs and staying within legal work hours.

Here’s how to complete the process from start to finish.

Step-by-Step Guide to Getting a Work Permit

  1. Get the Job First
You must have a job offer before you can apply for a work permit.
  2. Fill Out the First Section
With your parent or guardian, complete lines 1 through 4 on the work permit form. This includes basic information like your name, date of birth, and contact info.
  3. Bring Proof of Age
Acceptable documents include your birth certificate, passport, or school records. An issuing official at the school will need to see this before continuing.
  4. Take the Form to Your Employer
Your employer will fill out lines 5 through 9. They must describe the type of work you’ll be doing and confirm that it’s not dangerous.
  5. Return the Form to the School
Bring the fully completed form back to the school for final review.
  6. Permit is Approved and Distributed
Once the form is approved and signed:
    • The original goes to your employer
    • One copy is kept at the school
    • One copy is sent to the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions
